Description

Between 1668 and 1843, around 271,000 people were forcibly shipped from the slave ports of St. Louis, Senegal, and Bissau (modern-day Guinea-Bissau), regions where the Fula (Fulani) people lived. These enslaved individuals were taken to various parts of the Americas: 6,400 to the Gulf Coast, 10,000 to Charleston, 4,500 to Chesapeake, and 1,400 to New York. This mass displacement profoundly shaped the demographics and history of the U.S. South and the wider Atlantic world.
