Sanjoy Mukherjee (born on 14th August 1983) is the Chairman & MD of S.I(Sanjoy International) Surgical Pvt. Ltd., who built a 250-crore medical equipment company, making it East India’s most successful company. Born and brought up in a Bengali family, he came out of the zone where it is believed that Bengalis remain uninterested in business; Sanjoy Mukherjee changed the perception of society and proved that a person with a growth mindset and strong will and abilities can face every challenge to achieve his desired goal, and make a mark in the society.
Sanjoy's childhood days were filled with struggles, and this made Sanjoy inclined towards living a dignified life. After watching his family struggle for a livelihood since childhood, Sanjoy started his venture by providing livelihood protection to helpless people.
Blessed with solid abilities in market analysis, honesty as a gift from his father, and continuous attempts made him start his venture of surgical products under the sole proprietorship scheme for sixteen years, Sanjoy created a business base of around 250 crores.
He is the son of Late Subhash Mukherjee, who lived like a wanderer. Still, honesty, never-nodding behavior, talents, and guiding others have inspired Sanjoy, leading him toward a successful journey.
Early Life
Mr. Sanjoy Mukherjee was born on August 14, 1983, at Shantipur State General Hospital, Nadia. Sanjoy's early life was an immense struggle. Despite facing many challenges, he did not lose hope and stayed focused on reaching the milestone of establishing his dream project. Sanjoy grew up in poverty with his parents, Late Subhash and Arti Mukherjee, an elder sister, Rupali, and a younger brother, Rajib. They lived in a 10/10 Square feet room, Bankra Jora Mandirtala, Howrah.
From class 8th, Sanjoy started taking tuition for the students of the same class. Sanjoy’s mother used to sell cow dung cakes. When Sanjoy was in class 5th, he went to Bhilai with his Father for some official work of his Father. This was the first time when he experienced a journey on a train. Sanjoy’s father met with an accident in Bhilai and got multiple disorders.
Sanjay was a bright student in his class and passed the secondary examination from Bankra Satashi High School in 1999 and higher secondary from Batra Shikshyatan in 2001 with 2nd Division. He received his honors from Narasinha Dutt College and had many troubles during that time, as Sanjoy needed to sell surgical equipment for the whole day. Sanjoy used to attend two to three classes a week, and he got expelled from Honors and enrolled in B. Com pass courses. With this, Sanjoy became comfortable, as he could quickly work as a salesman.
Career
Sanjoy Mukherjee started his career as a salesman of LPG gas pipes and regulators. His earnings were Rs. 20 per item. One day, while waiting for the result of his secondary examination, Sanjoy met an older man who was busy forging surgical equipment, as one of his relatives was working as an accountant at Calcutta Metallic company. The older man was impressed with Sanjoy's appearance and gave him the idea of selling surgical equipment at a 5% commission. Sanjoy asked his father and took his first step in selling surgical equipment. He contacted the old man and showed his eagerness towards the work. The older man provided him with surgical items and asked him to attend some Nursing homes, followed by a viaticum of Rs.200/-.
In the initial days, Sanjoy felt quite frustrated, but his father kept encouraging him. One day, Sanjoy went to the Swasti Hospital, Magra, where he felt embarrassed when the doctor asked him to showcase the functioning of surgical equipment and an OT nurse helped him; that was the turning point of his life. The doctor purchased the equipment worth Rs. 14000/-, which was Sanjoy’s first success. After facing more challenges and a suggestion from someone, Sanjoy reached Amtala Patkabari, Baharampur, and sold the items.
Sanjoy earned Rs.10,000/- monthly in 2000. In 2003, Dr. Vijay Khandelwal, Baleshwar suggested that Sanjoy start a business, and after discussing it with his father, he started with the same. Sanjoy’s father selected SI, which meant S for Sanjoy and I for International.
Establishment of SI Pvt. Ltd.
Sanjoy registered SI Pvt Ltd. In 2006, under the West Bengal Govt at Rs. 5001/-at Balitikuri. Sanjoy initially started the business with his brother Rajib and took a showroom of 40 square feet on rent. The monthly income of Sanjoy was Rs. 40,000/-, and he purchased 1 and ½ kathas of land with a house costing Rs. 1lakh and 40 thousand.
In 2007, Sanjoy faced a ton of difficulties when his father’s cancer surgery was unsuccessful, and his treatment cost 15 lakhs, and his brother met with an accident. He was admitted to CMRI Hospital, Kolkata. Sanjoy lost his father in 2008, and he was left with no money at that time. Then, Dr. Vijay Khandelwal ordered him a cheque of Rs. 3 lakhs for the supply of surgical equipment in his new nursing home. This was the most extensive support by Dr. Khandelwal.
Personal Life
While caring for their younger brother at CMRI Hospital, Sanjoy met Samarpita, whose father was also admitted to the same hospital. Samparpita was a great singer and was highly educated. They created a perfect bond, but there were hurdles in their marriage. Samarpita’s father disagreed with her marriage to Sanjoy, but her mother agreed on the same. On the other hand, Sanjoy’s father didn’t want a dark-complexioned daughter-in-law, so he was also unhappy with the marriage. But, after managing both the families, Sanjoy and Samarpita got married in 2008.
Establishment of Manufacturing Unit
In 2010, Sanjoy joined a health meet in Chennai for the first time. He took a stall for 30,000/- displayed his surgical items and contacted reputed doctors from Kolkata. Sanjoy established a manufacturing unit in a 1200 square feet area at New Alipur, Kolkata, in 2009 and initiated manufacturing beds, furniture, and medical equipment for the hospital.
Sanjoy started an export business in 2014. Inititally, he participated with Kenya, and then expanded his business globally in Bangladesh, Tanzania, Bhutan, Nepal, UAE, Myanmar, Kongo, Azerbaijan, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Cambodia, Veitnam, Sudan, Mexico, Yuganda, and Ethiopia. He also collaborated with National and International companies, and created collaborative partnerships.
Currently, Sanjoy has business clients of the Government and Private health infrastructures in almost all the Indian states. Today, SI Surgical is the parent company of SI Surgical Pvt. Ltd., and SI Surgi India Ltd., and has become the largest manufacturing and export company in Eastern India. SI Surgical is providing livelihood to around 500 employees and 200 Vendors.
But the journey has not ended yet, Sanjoy is spreading his network within all segments of medical industry, and is expecting a turnover of Rs.1000 crores from his current turnover of 250 crores within five years from now.
