Description
Mebendazole over the counter is an antiparasitic medication used to treat intestinal worm infections such as pinworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. It works by blocking the worms' ability to absorb glucose, which causes them to lose energy and die.
Usually taken as a single dose or for several days, depending on the infection.
Can be taken with or without food, but high-fat meals may improve absorption.
In cases of pinworm reinfection, a second dose may be needed after 2 weeks.
Most people tolerate mebendazole well, but mild side effects include stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, or dizziness.
Not recommended for pregnant women unless prescribed by a doctor.
Hygiene measures, such as handwashing and washing clothes, help prevent reinfection.
Mebendazole is a safe and effective treatment for parasitic infections when used correctly.
