Harassment in the workplace is any unwelcome behavior that makes another person feel uncomfortable, threatened, or disrespected. It can appear in different forms such as verbal comments, offensive jokes, slurs, physical gestures, unwanted advances, inappropriate touching, or displaying harmful images and materials. Harassment is not always obvious; it may happen through emails, instant messages, social media posts, or subtle body language. Importantly, it is not limited to interactions between supervisors and employees—it can occur between colleagues, customers, vendors, or anyone connected to the workplace.
