When I initially decided to pursue an MCom degree, I pictured a scenario where debates with lecturers would lead to new levels of understanding around markets, business, and finance. I envisioned classrooms being filled with open debate, hands-on case studies, and guidance that would take us outside the books. But as I integrated into my program, I gradually understood that something was off—something was lacking.

Most students at present have the same gripe: we don't learn enough from our lecturers. Teachers are not stupid, but the manner of imparting knowledge has evolved over the years. In a lot of ways, the teacher-student relationship that used to characterize postgraduate classrooms seems to be eroding. 

Why Students Feel the Gap

The gap isn't merely one of pedagogy—it's one of expectations. Students today expect to acquire more applied skills out of their MCom, particularly with employers requiring critical thinking, data analysis, and communication skills. But when the majority of professors continue to stick to a theory-based pedagogy, students emerge from the classroom believing they're not ready for what's really out there.

Some students complain that information usually remains confined to what is texted in a book, instead of being connected with the vibrancy of international markets, tax reforms, business collapses, or modern-day financial designs. The deficit between pedagogy and requirement continues to grow.

Looking Ahead

The solution may not lie in blaming teachers or students alone. Education systems need structural changes—smaller classrooms, interactive teaching, mentorship programs, and real-time industry exposure. It is only when knowledge flows freely between professor and student, beyond rigid syllabuses, that an MCom degree can unlock its full value again.
